Uniknya, Bernardus sebenarnya nggak tahu persis alasan ketiadaan sosok ayah dalam gambar itu. Meski begitu, dia memiliki teori terkait hal ini."Menurut saya itu cara untuk mempengaruhi ibu rumah tangga supaya membeli. Jadi yang penting ada ibunya di situ," terang Bernardus.
Menurutnya, dalam sebuah keluarga, yang memegang peran untuk berbelanja ada seorang ibu. Hal ini membuat peran ayah nggak begitu penting pada kaleng tersebut.
"Kita sketch dulu. Kira-kira seperti ini mau gak. Sampai sudah setuju kira-kira komposisinya seperti itu, baru kita lukis," terangnya
Lukisan itu diibuat oleh Bernardus sekitar tahun 1970-an. Waktu itu, dia mendapat pesanan untuk menggambarnya dari sebuah perusahaan separasi film.
"Mereka pesan banyak sekali gambar ke saya. Salah satunya Khong Guan itu," ujarnya.
Kala itu, dia mendapat contoh gambar Khong Guan dari sebuah majalah. Potongan gambar itu terlihat begitu lusuh. Bernardus hanya mengikuti saja arahan yang diberikan pihak pemesan soal gambar yang diinginkan mereka.
Dia mengungkapkan jika sebenarnya gambar yang sampai saat ini menghiasi kaleng biskuit Khong Guan itu nggak banyak berbeda dengan gambar contoh yang disodorkan padanya. Dia hanya mengganti beberapa detail seperti warna baju dan posisi-posisi tokoh di dalam gambarnya.
Begini Awal Karier Bernadus sebagai Pelukis
Bernardus mengawali karier sebagai pelukis profesional sejak menjalani kuliah di Institut Teknologi Bandung. Rumah kosnya dulu terletak di Jalan Lengkong Kecil, Bandung, bersebelahan dengan kantor redaksi Aktuil, sebuah majalah musik terkenal saat itu. Dulu, dia sering main ke kantor redaksi Aktuil untuk membantu membuat ilustrasi.Awalnya hanya bantu-bantu, Bernardus justru keterusan menjadi pelukis hingga membuat kuliahnya terganggu.
“Lama-lama kuliahnya ketinggalan," ungkapnya.
Sejak saat itulah dia mulai mendapat pesanan komik yang lama-lama semakin banyak. Dari komik, Bernardus kemudian sering mendapatkan pesanan dari perusahaan untuk menggambar produk mereka.
"Dulu, saya mendapatkan pesanan dari supermarket. Itu bangga sekali. Hampir semua etiket-etiket yang laku itu saya yang bikin. Tetapi, makin ke sini, makin sedikit," tutur Bernardus.
